Begin message – Historical Context

We have been in receipt of several communiques of late including and not limited to the mediums of morse, semaphore, digital and audio channels inquiring as to the reasoning behind our name ‘Titan II’.

Well the truth can be told in an image.

The one at the top of this post actually.

This is a Titan II rocket, or to give it it’s full name the LGM-25C Titan II rocket. It was the last liquid-fueled built by the United States. But it holds a place in our hearts as the workhorse rocket which launched all 12 of NASA’s Gemini missions. 10 of which were manned mission into space.

The Titan II had a second life as an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) during the cold war. Thankfully none were ever launched in anger and happily the Titan II eventually left the silos and took to space again. The Titan II was decommissioned as an ICBM with the remaining missiles converted into space-launch vehicles once more and they remained in that role until the final Titan II was launched in 2003.

We could go into many reasons as to why we chose Titan II as our name, write lines of purple prose and clever conceptual logic. But the reality is, we just like the name, and hey, it’s a giant super cool looking rocket, who wouldn’t like it?

This has been an educational message presented by Titan II North Silo, thank you for your attention.
